Manual S: Is it required for building code compliance?
Lauri Gambino & Dennis Stroer • March 20, 2024

Far from being an optional addition to the calculation and design process, ACCA Manual S has become a mandatory requirement for building compliance in HVAC energy calculations and system design.
The inclusion of Manual S in building codes, emphasizes its pivotal role in fostering
(1) a safe place to live – a roof over our heads protecting us from the outdoor world;
(2) durability – it won’t fall down – if we oversize, durability will be compromised due to rot; (3) health – oversizing compromises humidity control which leads to the growth of dust mites and mold – and that’s not healthy! (4) comfort at 75°F indoor temperature can only be achieved through good humidity control; (5) energy efficiency. Manual S impacts all these conditions. If safety, durability, health, and comfort are properly addressed, energy efficiency will fall into place.
This blog delves into the five reasons behind the inclusion of Manual S in building codes:
-
Precision in Sizing for Optimal Performance
-
Meeting Energy Efficiency Standards
-
Avoiding System Over-Sizing Pitfalls
-
Enhancing Indoor Comfort and Air Quality
-
Documentation for Compliance Verification
